A14 Huntingdon bypass approved

NCE stock roads

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin has given the green light to the £1.5bn Huntingdon-to-Cambridge A14 upgrade project.

McLoughlin granted a development consent order to Highways England for the scheme in line with recommendations from the Planning Inspectorate.

The project will include building a bypass to the south of Huntingdon; widening part of the existing A14 between Swavesey and Girton; widening part of the A14 Cambridge northern bypass; widening a section of the A1 between Brampton and Alconbury; and demolishing the A14 viaduct at Huntingdon.

Work could start within 12 months and be completed by 2021.
