On brink of ex-gratia payments to rescue road contractors

Cabinet ministers are expected to decide in the next few days whether or not to approve a multi-million pound rescue deal by making ex-gratia payments to major road contractors and blacktop subcontractors to compensate for losses due to doubled oil prices.

California flooded as dam overtops

Overtopping of the 200m high Lake Hodges dam in Rancho, Santa Fe washed out a section of Californias Del Dios highway last week and caused extensive flooding. Emergency spillway gates were later opened to reduce the hydrostatic force behind the dam. Less than 20km away in Oceanside the San Luis river swelled to bridge soffit level and washed out 30m of a 450mm diameter sewer pipe carrying 136,000l of raw sewage per day.
