£35M of Tyne and Wear Metro work awarded

Nexus, Tyne and Wear metro

Civils contractors have won a slice of the £35M Tyne & Wear Metro modernisation programme.

Replacing old infrastructure, including track and overhead lines, is part of the contracts issued by Nexus, the public body which owns and manages the Tyne and Wear Metro. The £35M investment is part of a bigger £11M, £350M investment plan  – the programme is currently in its sixth year.

The two track replacement schemes will be delivered by TXM Rail. The 300km overhead line renewal work is being delivered by an in-house works team at Nexus. Replacement of Killingworth Road bridge is being delivered by Story Contracting

Nexus is seeking government funding for a further £518.5M of renewals over the next decade.
