2012 Marble Arch Russian ice rink unveiled

Sochi 2014 winter Olympics organisers have announced plans to construct an ice rink in the heart of London during the 2012 Games.

A rink is to be installed in front of Marble Arch in central London.

Sochi 2014 organising committee president and chief executive Dmitry Chernyshenko said that visitors to the Sochi World attraction will “come to the winter during the hot summer”.

Ticket sales will pay for the 1,000-capacity facility, which also will feature a pavilion with cultural activities.

The ice-rink will highlight sporting performance. Russian figure-skating stars will give master classes for young skaters. British figure-skaters will be invited to take part in the Sochi World ice-shows.

It is also hoped the event may also promote the southern Russian city of Sochi, where the next winter Games will take place, and the surrounding Krasnodar region through sport and cultural performances.
