SSE Networks (SSEN) has completed construction of a 1,200 MW energy link in Scotland around £30M under budget.
The electricity link between Caithness and Moray transfers energy from offshore and onshore wind farms to the National Grid.
The connector is SSEN’s largest single investment ever, and has come in under budget, with a final cost of £970M against an allowance of over £1bn.
The link will transfer 588 MW of energy from the Beatrice offshore wind farm, and 177 MW from the Dorenell onshore wind farm into the National Grid.
An additional connection will add a further 100 MW of onshore capacity from wind farms in the Caithness and Ross-shire areas in the coming months.
The link uses a 113km subsea cable beneath the Moray Firth seabed between new converter stations at Spittal in Caithness and Blackhillock in Moray.
Constructed over a period of four years, the project also involved work at eight electricity substation sites as well as two overhead electricity line reinforcement projects.
SSEN’s director of transmission Dave Gardner, who led the project said the connector has been a “highly complex project” in all areas of construction and design.
“The successful energisation and commissioning of the Caithness-Moray link, on time and within budget, is a significant achievement for SSEN and everyone involved in the project,” he said.
“Caithness-Moray has been a highly complex project, requiring very high standards of project design, development, construction and commissioning.”
He added: “It has been delivered by a team of committed and skilled people, working closely with contractors and other stakeholders. It will support deployment of renewable energy in the north of Scotland for many years to come.”
“Now an operational asset, we will closely monitor the link and associated infrastructure to ensure its continued success as an integral part of the GB transmission system.”
