LUL fears for Central Line tunnels after CTRL ground collapse

London Underground was this week refusing to allow a Channel Tunnel Rail Link tunnelling machine to pass under its Central Line tunnels fearing it could destroy them.

LUL said it wanted CTRL engineers to stop tunnelling until it knows the exact cause of a ground collapse on the CTRL route just 300m away last weekend.

Private water plans meet storm of protest

Wide ranging implications of privatising the 10 regional water authorities are becoming apparent following publication of Government's White Paper last week. Well over 1,000 engineers working for district councils could lose their jobs as a result of the demise of sewerage agency agreements. And consultants are angered that Government wants privatised water authorities to seek consultancy work abroad and that many aspects of water and sewarage laws are to be rewritten to accommodate privatisation.
