Urgent safety checks are under way this week on over 400 steel lampposts in Trafford, Greater Manchester, following the collapse of a rusting 10m tall column during high winds last week. The 30 year old column was severely corroded where it passed at ground level into a concrete footing. Engineers fear that 443 similar Hemcol columns, could also suffer from corrosion.
