CONTRACTOR LAING last week announced that it is to merge its civil engineering, building and construction management activities
within the umbrella of a new subsidiary Laing Ltd.
The new division combines the three activities within three 'one stop shop' centres in Manchester, Birmingham and London.
Laing Ltd's chief executive will be quantity surveyor Paul Whitmore, currently associate director of parent company John Laing plc.
John Laing plc finance director James Armstrong will be the division's non-executive chairman.
The shake up coincided with Laing Civil Engineering managing director Tony Evans' decision to quit the company and pursue other interests. Evans was in charge of the division which won the disastrous Cardiff Arms Park redevelopment contract (NCE last week).
David Blair, who was chairman of John Laing Construction, has retired from the group.
Taylor Woodrow's new chief executive is Keith Egerton, currently property division managing director. His appointment comes almost a year after the departure of his predecessor John Castle, who stayed in the job for just six months (NCE 6 November 1997).
