This final session brings together lessons from the previous sessions by considering the value of geotechnics in the wider contexts of overall project delivery and whole life costs. However interesting and innovative the details of planning, design and construction may be in themselves, it is their successful combination that will make a project satisfactory. Recent infrastructure maintenance projects provide an excellent example of how geotechnics can be incorporated into the long term management of earthworks structures bringing significant improvements in performance and other major benefits.
To recap on the main themes, good geotechnics allows effective management of ground related risks and can bring value to the construction process.
Innovation in the planning, design and construction of geotechnical works brings economic, practical or time benefits to a project - with real benefits being achievable both during construction, and on a whole life cost basis.
To achieve value, geotechnical expertise must be brought in at an early enough stage. Close collaboration between geotechncial specialists and the project team is essential - preferably geotechnical engineers should be incorporated within multidisciplinary project teams.
Partnering and risk sharing contract procurement approaches provide a good framework within which clients can achieve value from geotechnics in construction.
