Key facts: Iran

Iran is the world's third largest oil producer and second largest producer of natural gas - it has an estimated 16% of the world's reserves but delivers just 2% of output. It wants to double its oil producing capacity to 8M barrels/day by 2015.

Iran also has huge reserves of copper, coal, sulphur, iron ore and quarry materials. It exploits only 0.5% of known deposits a year.

Construction accounts for 3% of Iran's gross domestic product, water and power for 1%, oil and gas 7%, and industry and mining 18%.
