Key Crossrail shaft completed ahead of schedule

Resequencing of work by Crossrail western tunnels contractor BAM, Ferrovial, Kier (BFK) and subcontractor Barhale has enabled a key shaft to be completed nine months ahead of schedule.

The 15m diameter Fisher Street shaft in Holbourn will be used as an emegency access shaft once the new rail line is completed but the early construction means that it can be used to support BFK’s tunnelling work on a crossover tunnel below Red Lion Square.

The Fisher Street shaft was originally scheduled to be completed in August 2014 but resequencing of work enabled early completion of permanent waterproofing and concrete lining of the shaft.
