Dr Robert Mair has been appointed professor of geotechnical engineering at Cambridge University, with effect from October 1998.

He takes over as head of one of the world's leading geotechnical research departments from Professor Andrew Schofield, who is retiring.

Mair will remain a director of Geotechnical Consulting Group and will continue to be closely involved in its activities, working part-time at its London office.
