It is common for projects in industry and the public sector to be run on an ad hoc basis, as 'hit or miss affairs', says the Industrial Society.
Asked to define what they saw as barriers to success, more than 80% of the 524 organisations questioned by the society cited lack of communication, while a similar number blamed lack of commitment from senior management.
While able to recognise these barriers, many organisations seemed not to understand why they had arisen or how to overcome them, the society claims.
Almost three in 10 began projects without having any stated objectives and 13% of projects went ahead without being formally defined, it adds.
'The bottom line is that every organisation should have its own consistent project management process, ' says Industrial Society expert Neil Johnstone, 'but very few organisations realised this.
Overall, the picture is one of confusion over both the project process and the best way of co-ordinating teams from a people perspective. This suggests more training is needed to enable organisations to run stable and workable projects'.
