Judges pick

Engineering Image 2005

1Phillip Young's photograph of the Baldock Bypass was Sunday Times picture editor's favourite - and the one most likely to be used in newspapers for its depth of composition and clear relationship between background and foreground.

But other judges felt the composition was too busy - the tunnel alone or the dumper truck could have made the winning shot.

2Christopher Mole's striking image of Balcombe Railway Viaduct in Sussex was commended for expressing strong colours, textures and shadows with a hint of intrigue as the image doesn't shout out instantly what it is.

But judges felt that it didn't meet the brief.
