Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott launched a national debate on sustainable development this week. One key aim will be to establish a set of core indicators which will be used to assess environmental impact. Prescott hopes these will eventually rival the key economic indicators in the consciousness of the nation. Consultation will continue until the end of May, with a white paper planned by the end of the year.
