Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council is looking for a senior structural engineer (see ad, page 35).
Sorry, who? Sandwell - it's in the West Midlands silly, next to Birmingham and Walsall.
And. . . ? There's a huge amount of regeneration going on. Sandwell's been rather down at heel and now the council's investing heavily in transport, housing and the environment? it's pulling things down and rebuilding them left, right and centre. Oh, and there's an initiative to rebuild every secondary school in the borough.
I'm impressed! You should be. The engineering department carried out £30M worth of capital works last year and earned £5M in design fees. And Sandwell engineers get stuck into all kinds of things - foundations, bridge design, roads, multi-storey buildings. They even manage to make site investigation, repair and maintenance sound exciting - lots of old mines and contamination to detect; sink estates to be reinvented as little pockets of urban paradise.
So pretty varied? Boredom probably won't be a problem.
