A DRAMATIC increase in demand for staff and contract length in the UK geotechnical job market over the last two years is shown in the latest figures from geotechnical recruitment consultant and contract staff agency Fielder Geotechnics.
'While some individuals have clearly been leaving the industry, the permanent market is becoming as buoyant as the contract market, with increasing numbers of posts being filled by our engineers, ' claimed managing director Chris Fielder.
With the skills shortage hitting the civil engineering industry, Fielder said the pool of suitably qualified contract staff had reduced.
'We have been advertising overseas to address the imbalance, ' he said.
'Nevertheless, there has been an inevitable rise in temporary staff rates which is set to continue until rates encourage the highest quality people back into contract work.'
The Fielder index is an empirical calculation based on a combination of the number of contract staff the firm has working, the number of requests received, the length of each contract and the number of new contracts which start in any one period.
Fielder added that as the calculation also takes into account the number of permanent staff being employed, the index gives an indication of industry confidence - the more permanent staff being hired, the more confident the industry is about the future.
