Japanese contractor and civil engineers charged in Singapore

Japanese contractor Nishimatsu and four civil engineers have been charged in Singapore over last year's fatal Nicoll Highway tunnel collapse (NCE 19 May).

Nishimatsu is charged with failing to ensure the temporary retaining wall system was properly built and maintained and of running an unsafe site. Project director Shun Sugawara, project co-ordinator Paul Broome and design manager Kazue Shimada also face charges under the Factories Act. Ng Seng Yoong, from client the Land Transport Authority, is also charged. All face possible fines and jail terms.

The case is adjourned until August.
