Jakarta riots force out expats

CONSULTANTS AND contractors have been evacuating expatriate staff from Indonesia over the last week as riots threatened their safety.

Kvaerner had to evacuate the biggest number, and were expected to have withdrawn 130 people by Wednesday.

Consultants Ove Arup, Maunsell and Halcrow only had small numbers of staff in Indonesia, but most have now been removed on Foreign Office advice.

Maunsell has pulled out four Australian engineers, and Arup had withdrawn two British staff. Halcrow had arranged for its five expat engineers to be withdrawn on Wednesday.
