Izmit Domestic and Industrial Water Supply Project

Turkey's catastrophic earthquake on 17 August was centred on Izmit - the region served by the recently-commissioned project, claimed to be the world's largest build-operate-transfer water scheme.

Initial surveys by Thames Water engineers report only slight damage to the main infrastructure of the water scheme which was conceived to supply water in bulk to Koceali province's 1.2M population.

The project was started in the 1980s by the Turkish State Water Organisation whose contractor Gama began work on the 108m high clay core Izmit dam in 1987. But funding problems delayed progress until Thames Water and Turkish contractor Guris promoted Izmit as a BOT project with a 15-year term. A lump sum design and build contract was signed in April 1996.

Rapid progress followed. The 5.2M.m3 dam was completed along with a treatment plant capable of delivering 170M.m3 of water a year.
