Your 'senior engineer' quoted as saying the Ulley spillway chute was a flawed and unusual design (NCE last week) clearly does not spend much time looking at Pennine dams.

Many, if not most, have this feature and have survived the test of time.

To answer Andrew Hawes' query in the same issue, I can confirm that the Ulley dam does have a low-level scour outlet, albeit not very large.
