'It's a fait accompli'

Treasury ministers this week came under fire over their low profile decision to publish the consultation document on regional funding via its website.

The RAC Motoring Trust said the move was a cynical ploy to avoid confrontation.

Others including the AA and ICE were in the dark about its existence.

'It's pretty dodgy and pretty underhand, ' said RAC Motoring Trust executive director Edmund King. 'It's not really a consultation but a fait accompli.' The consultation, Devolving decision making: a consultation on regional funding allocations, was released on 2 December with a host of other documents related to Chancellor Gordon Brown's pre-budget statement.

Responses are sought by 10 March, with an intention to announce regional allocations in April's budget.
