The entire Millennium Wheel project team was overcome by a wave of disappointment after Friday's ill-fated wheel lift plan was aborted.
'There were no thoughts about seeking to lay blame for what happened,' explained project director Tim Renwick. 'Rather than rushing around in a blind panic, we just shut down the operations and came back fresh on Saturday morning to sort out what to do next.'
But clearly, working on such a high profile project has its down side when things go off plan. Having attracted the attention of around 40 TV crews and drummed up a crowd several thousand strong to witness the lift, the failure to deliver was embarrassing.
'It is a very challenging piece of engineering and it would have been nice to have got this bit right. We all want to see the wheel upright,' said Renwick.
But he insisted that the added pressure of the delay would not tempt the team to rush the next lift attempt. 'Again, only when all our tests are completed satisfactorily will we be ready to lift the Wheel,' he said.
