Investigation launched into Old Street tunnel breach

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has today launched an investigation into how a piling auger crashed into a London rail tunnel near Old Street station.

The investigation will review the information available to the people responsible for safety on the construction site responsible and the way construction projects near railway tunnels manage risk.

The breach was discovered when a train driver reported water gushing from the roof of the tunnel. When  a second train driver went to investigate he found that two, 2m sections of the auger had fallen into the tunnel and were touching the track.
