Integrated transport delay fear

GROWING FEARS about the legislative timetable for the Integrated Transport White Paper were voiced at the ICE Transport Board meeting on 3 September.

The concerns could form a major part of the ICE's written evidence to be submitted to the House of Commons Environment, Transport & Regional Affairs Committee inquiry into the issues raised by the White Paper.

Director of Engineering John Plumb said: 'There are concerns that [Deputy Prime Minister] John Prescott may not be able to deliver key parts of the White Paper, such as the Strategic Rail Authority, in this parliament. We are also concerned that local authorities will be expected to deliver a lot of the measures without support and guidance of the Government.'

Written evidence from the ICE has to be submitted by 25 September. Individuals or groups may also comment - contact the committee office at the House of Commons. Tel: (0171) 219 3266.
