Inspiring move

Letters

I write to offer congratulations to those responsible for saving Belle Tout lighthouse from the perils of nature (NCE 18 March). They have also managed to generate a blaze of publicity the likes of which would usually be reserved for newly pregnant pop stars! By doing so, they have managed to inspire headlines which differ from the all too common 'costly delays' or 'over priced eyesore'.

As the geotechnical engineer responsible for the site investigation, I was fortunate enough to be involved in this project and witness first hand the boundless enthusiasm and optimism of those responsible for its success. I hope that the ICE and the profession at large champion this project as an ideal vehicle to draw wider attention to our cutting edge, invaluable service industry. In doing so, we will undoubtedly attract the kind of future professionals which any amount of 'educational reforms' could only dream of.
