Swedish start-up Modvion has secured £430,000 to build the first modular wooden wind turbine tower.
The aim of the company is to reduce the weight of turbine towers, making transport from factory to site easier, and cutting carbon emissions in the process.
Modvion has developed a system of glued laminated timber panels mounted to a central cylinder frame to form modules. Once the modules are assembled, the entire tower can be erected within one or two days. The system can be configured to any height up to 150m.
The number of modules is dependant on the required height of the tower. Smaller towers can be assembled by a mobile crane.
The £430,000 of funding invested by Chalmers Ventures will go towards creating the first prototype, a 40m wind turbine to be built near Gothenburg Sweden, with assistance from Chalmers University of Technology.
The company claims that using the laminated timber construction for a 150m tower would save 2,000t of carbon dioxide and cut costs by 40% compared to conventional steel construction.
Modvio chief executive officer Otto Lundman said: “This has enabled Modvion to strengthen our team. Something that is very timely at a time when we want to start the certification of our construction and together with the Swedish Wind Power Technology Centre set up our first energy-generating prototype.”
If the prototype proves successful, Modvion aims to develop a 150m commercial model for market.
