Infrastructure output plummets

Infrastructure output fell in the second quarter of this year, official data has revealed.

The Office for National Statistics reported today that £3.04bn of new infrastructure work took place from 1 April to 30 June 2014.

This was 3.9% lower than in the previous three months, and 8.2% down on the same period a year earlier.

The drop in civils work was all the starker in the context of overall construction figures.

Construction output was unchanged from the first quarter of the year, but 4.8% up on the second quarter of 2013, according to the ONS data.
