IN BRIEF: Commercial water consumers

Commercial water consumers in England and Wales could be using water supplied by new firms if government plans to increase competition in the sector are approved by Parliament.

Environment minister Michael Meacher has announced proposals which would give industrial consumers who use more than 50Ml annually the right to be supplied by firms other than water companies.

New entrants to the industry would be allowed to use existing providers' pipework for their new customers. The plans will be subject to consultation.
