in brief British Waterways

British Waterways has appointed Norwest Holst Soil Engineering as sole ground investigation contractor for the waterway network throughout the UK until 2001.

Work will soon begin on the third super tower at Canary Wharf in London Docklands. Investment banker Citigroup has taken a lease on a 42 storey tower, to be constructed adjacent to the original 50 storey One Canada Square and HSBC's 42 storey tower currently under construction (GE March 1999).

Anyone involved in excavations for foundations and site investigation trial pits should consult the Health & Safety Executive's new guidance aimed at preventing accidents in excavation work. HSE ref HSG185, price £8.50, tel 01787 881165.
