IMAGES: New Street station roof goes on

The new atrium roof at Birmingham New Street station has been completed.

The ETFE roof covering will allow natural light onto the new concourse at the key West Midlands interchange.

Demolition engineers from subcontractor Coleman & Company will work for the next six months to remove thousands of tonnes of concrete and create the atrium.

Network Rail project director for Birmingham New Street Chris Montgomery said: “As our work to transform New Street station continues, excitement among our 1,000-strong workforce is really starting to build.

“Piece by piece, the design and concept for the station is being brought to life and it’s great to see the last section of the new roof covering lifted into place.

The redeveloped station will open next year.
