ICEFLOE a gender?

Letters

Mr P Williams (NCE 29 June) believes our Institution should represent the society in which we live and work. With a 96% male membership, the ICE has a huge gender imbalance.

Our profession is currently suffering a massive skills shortage. ICEFLOE's aim is to widen the target audience, enabling the profession to draw on the huge pool of talent available to it. We have set targets, not quotas, to help increase awareness and focus minds. The targets are very modest - our aim to increase the representation of women Fellows from 0.02% to 0.04% could hardly be perceived as 'dominance'.

ICEFLOE policy, which has been fully endorsed by Council, is to value the diversity and creative potential that men and women with differing backgrounds, skills and abilities bring to the Institution. Our aim is to create an environment free from harassment in which individual potential can be cultivated.

Michelle McDowell, chair, ICEFLOE, MJ McDowell@bdp. co. uk
