ICE should use art to fete engineering

Letters

Full marks to Mark Whitby (NCE 1 June) for suggesting the replacement of the pictures and 19th century portraits in the Institution's foyer. But why replace them with modern art?

Let's have high quality photographs and details of engineering structures, of the elegant engineering answers to problems and of the clever engineering which contributes to so much of modern day life.

Let's have an Institution headquarters which is crammed full of lively, interesting displays and models which will inspire members, visitors and the public, and not an Institution which is a monument to yesterday's men.

Graham Wilford(M), 137 Greenshaw Drive, Haxby, York YO32 2DB
