Ice on the roads


Cambridgeshire County Council blamed a sudden exodus of commuters from Cambridge for widespread gridlock as snow fell on Wednesday evening.

Precautionary de-icing salts were washed away by rain that fell shortly before the snow, worsening disruption . 'We did all we could in the circumstances, ' said assistant director of highways Matthew Lugg. 'Everybody leaving work at once is a nonsense.'
