Engineering firm Spencer has installed a de-humidification system a year ahead of schedule on the major landmark.
Work on the structure will stop the main cables of the Humber Bridge from corroding. The work has been carried out for clients the Humber Bridge Board and client engineers’ Aecom.
The project was due to finish in January 2012 however Spencer are now in the process of handing the system over to the client.
To carry out the dehumidification project Spencer developed bespoke gantries to access the cables which run the length of the bridge, with a main span of 1,410m. The gantry system recently won an award for innovation at the Yorkshire and Humber Construction Best Practice Awards.
Accessing panels, which measure 18m at a time, they wrapped the main cables to make them air tight , and installed a system to inject dry air through each of their 14,948 wires.
This dries the main cable wires and prevents further corrosion.
“We were able to finish early because of two main factors – good weather and years of experience,” said Spencer engineer Antony Goose.
“Spencer has had extensive experience carrying out dehumidification systems. Completing work at the Humber Bridge means we have successfully carried out dehumidification on every major suspension bridge in the UK.”
Spencer will continue to monitor the cables for the next 24 months. Spencer is now setting their sights on similar overseas projects, with a view to taking their knowledge and experience to America, Europe and potentially Asia.
