How much will I earn when I start work?

Salaries are standing up to the slowdown in the economy, says Greg Lettington.

Civil engineering students are faring well in the current climate. Although the built environment industry as a whole is suffering from the downturn, public sector investment remains high and civil engineers are still highly sought after.

Employers with strong public sector portfolios and framework agreements show continued growth and have been continuing to offer competitive salaries and benefits packages in order to entice the stronger candidates.

Overall salaries at the more junior end have either increased steadily or remained relatively flat over the past 12 months – with few regional discrepancies.

There remains a skills shortage, which has helped to maintain salary levels, but we are seeing some employers being more demanding about who they recruit and more cautious about how many people they take on.

Candidates who are qualified with a BEng degree or MEng are highly regarded by employers, but it is at the more senior end that demand is higher and qualified professionals can command higher salaries.

Many employers are continuing to support further studying to help secure your chartered status – this is a huge benefit that you should definitely take advantage of. If you enjoy chartered status, some employers are prepared to break the bank to secure the best talent.”
