Geotechnical exhibitors at Civils 2004 will be easily identifiable - all will be on of the 'Geotechnical Trail', set up by organisers to help visitors find geotechnical companies which will be scattered throughout Hall 17. Exhibitors on the trail will be labelled with a Ground Engineering takes a look at these firms and others of geotechnical relevance.

All Foundations All Foundations specialises in restricted access geotechnical and foundation work. Other sections cover site investigation, pressure grouting systems, deep drilling and grouting, fissure and shaft capping works and ground anchors, applied to a variety of problems.

Stand C65 Anchor Systems (Europe) The firm will be showing its range of high performance Duckbill mechanical ground anchors designed for temporary and permanent structural stabilisation and groundwork applications. Duckbills accept immediate proof loads up to 300kN and are fully proven in displaceable ground conditions. Also on show will be the Duckbill membrane drainage system for slopes, cuttings and embankments and a range of economical helical anchors.

Stand B56 Association of Consulting Engineers The Association of Consulting Engineers is a UK trade association for engineering, technical and management consultancies. It represents more than 600 firms from sole practitioners to large multidisciplinary practices.

Stand C43 Bactec International Bactec International deals with all aspects of explosive ordnance risk mitigation for construction and site remediation projects, both on land and underwater. Landowners and developers visiting the firm's stand (and attending its seminar) can find out about how this often overlooked risk can best be measured, managed and mitigated.

Stand F47 Bureau Veritas Bureau Veritas is a conformity assessment, certification, training and consulting group specialising in quality, health and safety, environment and social accountability. Last year it acquired Weeks Group, the engineering and environmental consultancy and materials testing house. The deal has seen the company's UK network grow to more than 1000 employees in 21 locations.

Stand D53 Campbell Scientific Campbell Scientific will be showing its range of data acquisition products, including dataloggers that monitor structures and can send alarms and SMS alerts and drive external devices.

The firm will also have its range of environmental monitoring systems on display.

Stand E25 Ciria Ciria is the independent and authoritative broker of construction research and innovation in the UK.

Ciria's activities span three market sectors: buildings and facilities;

transport; and water and utilities.

Membership includes all construction stakeholder groups and covers both the supply and demand sides of the industry, as well as most of the relevant public sector champions and regulators. Ciria is engaged with most leading construction research organisations and universities, both in the UK and overseas.

Stand G41 Cofra UK Geosynthetic firm Cofra UK focuses on soil improvement methods for infrastructure projects, the protection of concrete structures and the use of liners for the isolation of existing and newly built landfills. Cofra provides expertise for and works with local companies in over 40 countries.

Stand G54 Corus Hydrobarrier Corus Hydrobarrier provides steel sheet piling solutions. It designs, manufactures and installs sealed, watertight piling for basements, tanks and contaminated land barriers.

Hydrobarrier specialises in providing solutions, combining installation techniques, durability and structural strength with the most appropriate sealant system for each application, with warranty.

Stand G20 Dew Construction Dew Construction is a contractor that undertakes a broad range of heavy and light civil engineering works including road and rail bridges, roadworks, coastal protection, marine and inland waterways, water and power industry works, earthworks, land reclamation , heavy foundation and infrastructure works. Its environmental contractor Response Bioremediation uses mechanical solutions to clean up contaminated sites.

Stand F65 Bauer Inner City Bauer Inner City is the UK arm of the international Bauer organisation, best known for its civil engineering technologies. The UK division operates within specific specialist product areas. These include flood defence systems (the Bauer IBS Demflood Demountable System), Bauer ductile iron piling, diaphragm and sheet pile cut-off walls and environmental engineering.

Stand G45 Don & Low The Lotrak range of woven geotextiles has been designed for separation, filtration, drainage, reinforcement and erosion control. All are manufactured under a quality management system in accordance with ISO 9002, and are independently tested under the relevant BS EN test methods for geotextiles by a NAMAS accredited laboratory. They are manufactured, tested and CE marked in accordance with the EN standards.

Stand G61 Dywidag Systems International DSI focuses on the development and application of post-tensioning, geotechnical and stay cable systems for construction and mining industries.

It also produces the GEWI pile, a drilled micropile with a steel core made of the GEWI Bar with hot-rolled, continuous thread deformations on both sides - the so-called coarse GEWI Thread.

Stand G46 Foundation Equipment Foundation Equipment is the UK agent for German equipment manufacturer Bauer Maschinen, offering a wide range of products for the foundations industry.

The firm also supplies drilling rigs with CITB trained operators for augered ground work.

Stand E65 Geofabrics Geofabrics manufactures geotextiles and geocomposites. Project-specific composites can be produced based on components such as drainage cores, filters, grid reinforcement and impermeable membranes. The firm's products are used in landfill engineering, coastal/river works, beneath track ballast and in the remediation of contaminated land.

Stand C20 Geofirma Soils Engineering UK soil stabilisation contractor Geofirma has been prominent on a number of lime/cement stabilisation projects including the Manchester Stadium and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. It can use its Firmabase lime/cement method to stabilise contaminated and saturated soil.

Stand F20 Geomatrix Earth Science Geomatrix Earth Science will be showing details of its new branch of geophysics called Multi Channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW). The technique uses standard seismographs, geophones and energy sources, but uses a part of the seismic wave train that was previously thought of as noise - surface waves.

By measuring the surface wave velocity and frequency against distance travelled, a profile of the shear wave velocity with depth can be obtained, and in turn a direct measurement of a parameter critical in foundation design and soil stiffness. A 2D image of shear wave velocities can be obtained in the field, and ground stiffness measurements made insitu, across a whole site rather than at discrete points.

Stand D54 Geosynthetics The firm will be showcasing the latest developments in its geosynthetics range. The products can be used for a number of applications from slope stabilisations to infrastructure projects.

Stand G20 Ischebeck Titan Visitors to Ischebeck Titan's stand will be able to view the company's ground engineering products which have been used extensively in earth retention, temporary works, infrastructure improvement and micropiling projects across the world.

Displays will feature product samples with graphics showing typical applications in rock bolt, soil nail, tieback anchor and injection pile situations throughout the civil engineering and construction markets.

Also on the stand will be several new products aimed at the general construction industry that have been designed to enhance safety and productivity on site. These include Uniq-Supadek, a plastic alternative to the humble scaffold board, a new Edge Protection System and a half size scale model of the Climbtrac vertical formwork climbing system.

Stand A45 Godfreys of Dundee Geosynthetic manufacturer Godfreys of Dundee exports around the world and last year the firm sold about 100,000m 2of Autoway geotextiles in Belgium. It works with government bodies such as the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Environment and Public Works as well as contractors.

Stand G22 Ground Engineering Ground Engineering, the international magazine for the geotechnical industry, will be sharing a stand with sister publication New Civil Engineer. The magazine is the essential source of information on new and practical aspects of geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and geoenvironmental engineering. Engineers worldwide rely on GE for its comprehensive and diverse coverage and authoritative, focused reporting. The GE editorial team will be on hand throughout the show to discuss editorial ideas and the redesign launched this month.

Stand C72 Howden Insurance Brokers Relax on the Howden stand with a free neck and shoulder massage, while getting advice on all things insurancebased. Howden offers professional indemnity cover in a host of areas. All products cover damages and defence cost and can be tailored to suit the customer.

Stand F46 Hy-Ten Welded Mesh Hy-Ten designs, manufactures and supplies standard and bespoke gabion systems for civil engineering, architectural and landscape applications. Gabions are available in various specifications conforming to European standards. The firm will have CDs on design guides, specifications and case histories available on the stand.

Stand F25 Institution of Civil Engineers The ICE seeks to advance the knowledge, practice and business of civil engineering, to promote the breadth and value of the civil engineer's global contribution to sustainable, economic growth, and ethical standards, and to include in membership all those involved in the profession. It represents almost 80,000 professionally qualified civil engineers worldwide, with members in over 140 countries.

Stand D55 Key Systems Geotechnical Key Systems Geotechnical will be showcasing a number of its geotechnical office products at this year's show. These include the data management suite for geotechnical and geoenvironmental site investigations, HoleBASE. Other data management tools on show will be PocketSI, KeyHOLE and KeyLAB. Director Roger Chandler will be giving a seminar on electronic tools for site investigation on Wednesday afternoon.

Stand F68 Landpac Landpac is a ground improvement firm that uses high-energy impact compaction (HEIC), a system used to improve the engineering properties of insitu soils at depths from 2m to 4m.

The company also has the Landpac Continuous Impact Response monitoring system, a technique for recording real time soil response during HEIC.

Stand C35 Lankelma CPT Geotechnical site investigation contractor Lankelma says it aims to bring hi-tech site investigation into mainstream use as a standard site investigation package. It wants to achieve this by combining cone penetration techniques and a strong customer focus.

Stand D71 Leica Geosystems Leica Geosystems is a globally active surveying and geomatics technology group. It provides its customers with systems for accurate 3D data capturing, visualisation and modelling of space-related data. Since 2001 the laser and machine guiding specialist Laser Alignment and the 3D laserscanning and visualisation software company Cyra Technologies have been part of the Leica Geosystems group.

Stand D30 Matchtech Engineering The Matchtech Group is one of the UK's leading specialist technical recruitment consultancies. Over the last 12 months it has placed over 4,700 contractors and secured permanent employment for more than 1,000 individuals. The geotechnical division supplies permanent and contract geologists, geotechnical engineers, modellers, technicians, managers and graduates.

Stand E70 May Gurney Geotechnical May Gurney Geotechnical specialises in bored piling, CFA, displacement, rotary bored and mini piling, secant and contiguous bored pile walls. It also undertakes soil nailing, ground anchors, the remediation of contaminated land, site investigation and laboratory testing, and steelwork.

Stand C15 Midwest Diversified Technologies Incorporated MDTI's stand will feature the Chance Helical Pier Foundation System designed for applications in expansive soils, high water tables, fill areas and other areas where unstable soils require piling. The screw pile system does not produce spoil.

Stand F59 McArdle Stabilisation McArdle Stabilisation owns and operates one of the largest insitu and exsitu fleets of soil stabilisation plant in the UK, including integrated and conventional rotivators. It operates CMA 150 continuous batching plants that produce cement bound materials and structural concrete. The firm also has an in-house soils laboratory which primarily carries out soil suitability testing and mix design testing for all company activities.

Stand G30 Mini Soil Surveys Mini Soil Surveys was established in 1987 to supply ground investigation for domestic, low-rise and difficult access projects. The firm's patented 'go anywhere' mini rigs were originally aimed at subsidence investigations in northern England but soon became available across the UK.

Stand B68 Mouchel Parkman Mouchel Parkman is a support services company that delivers commercial, financial and technical consultancy to clients in the public and private sectors.

The company is the result of the recent merger between consultants Mouchel and Parkman. It particularly focuses on long-term management of infrastructure and services, with three cores: managed services, management consultancy services and project services.

Stand D68 Optiroc The Optiroc Group manufactures mineral-based materials for both buildings and other civil engineering projects through operations concentrated in Europe - especially around the Baltic and the North Seas.

In the UK, Optiroc has two main product areas: Exclay and Premix. Exclay is expanded clay aggregate that has a broad variety of applications, from blockmaking to geotechnical. Premix is a pumpable cementitious self-levelling floor screed.

Stand C68 Pennine Vibropiling Pennine's stand will include details of services and activities covering its vibropiling and ground improvement techniques. These include vibro stone and concrete columns, dynamic and rapid impact compaction and Penpile.

The latest addition to its fleet of bespoke piling equipment is the Mini Stratacaster. The firm says the lightweight, manoeuvrable rig will offer benefits when new requirements on working platform design and construction come into effect later this year. Pennine's expertise and equipment has been exported to over 20 countries around the world, particularly South-east Asia.

Stand D65 RedR Engineers for disaster relief The engineering industry's teamwork capabilities will be tested during a fundraising challenge organised by engineering charity RedR. Teams of UK engineers will take part in the RedR Challenge - a half-day competition that will see teams of four racing against the clock in a battle of skill, ingenuity and endurance. The challenge will take place on Wednesday. Set in a simulated disaster relief situation, it will highlight the issues faced by aid workers working in the field.

Stand G01 Ritchies Ritchies is a UK geotechnical firm offering integrated design and construct services across the full range of geotechnical contracting. Ritchies' stand will introduce a range of capabilities available through the company's network of regional centres and will cover a selection of applications including slope stabilisation, ground improvement, foundations and tunnel refurbishment.

Stand D45 Romtech Romtech is a multi-disciplinary manufacturing company that supplies engineered products to the tunnelling, piling, geotechnical and civil engineering industry. To accompany its range of products the firm offers customers technical support, a design service and, with its newly formed geotechnical division, an installation service.

Stand E30 Screwfast Foundations Screwfast supplies screw piled foundations for a number of applications. Network Rail uses them for signals, overhead line bases and other small structures. The piles are quickly installed, produce no spoil and can be removed leaving no residual concrete. Screwpiles can be used in conventional building to replace driven piles as there is no vibration. Installation needs no large machinery.

Stand A65 Powerbetter Environmental Processes Powerbetter Environmental Processes is a UK soil stabilisation and modification contractor. Newly available processes include treatments for encapsulating contaminated soils and for stabilising silt, sewage sludge and organic materials including peat and topsoil. The firm will be giving a seminar on a recent capping project in Widnes.

Stand C47 Tenax Stand B10 As a subsidiary of Tenax SpA, a big player in thermoplastic extrusion, Tenax UK offers a wide range of ground reinforcement structures to suit most traffic requirements including caravan parks, recreation areas, pathways, gateways, parking areas and taxiways for light aircraft and helicopter landing pads. In addition Tenax UK can provide solutions to soil erosion problems on slopes and embankments whether the ground is arid and rocky or where some vegetation exists.

Terram Terram is a geosynthetics company that supplies materials to the worldwide construction industry. Terram focuses on the supply of geotextiles for road and rail construction, high strength geogrids and cellular systems for stabilisation and reinforcement applications, and drainage composites for environmental and structural drainage systems.

Stand D31 Van Elle Geotechnical and foundation contractor Van Elle provides a range of services including CFA and driven piling, restricted access piling, underpinning, drilling and grouting, as well as its patented Hoopsafe, Brickbeam, VETEK, VeMech and Smartfoot systems. The company has some of the first operatives in the UK to obtain an NVQ Level 2 in underpinning operations.

Stand D21 Roger Bullivant Established in 1971, Roger Bullivant has grown into a large foundation company, offering a range of foundation products ranging in value from £1,000 to £10M. Many of the inhouse systems and techniques developed by the company are backed up by extensive research and development.
