HK sets up associate division

The Hong Kong Association has established a Graduates and Students Division. Five committee members have been elected; Chairman is George Wall, vice chairman Paul YH Lee, hon secretary/treasurer Tom Chu, and liaison officers Eva Kong and Fiona Liu.

Wall wrote a welcome message to all Associates, Graduates and Students in the territory. 'Following on from the formation of a local association in November 1999, we now have a full committee of young engineers representing the interests of Associate, Graduate and Student members in Hong Kong. The association is currently in the process of setting up the framework that will be essential to the future of the G&S in Hong Kong. This includes the development of a network of contacts, within the industry in Hong Kong and the region, as well as with other professional bodies.

'We are already planning a number of events. There is an intention to send a delegation to Shanghai this autumn, visiting universities and metro projects. To maintain our close link with the Institution, in particularly the GSNC, one of us will attend the GSNC committee meeting in London this November.

'In Hong Kong, we are contacting related institutions, for instance the ASCE (Hong Kong Section) and the Young Members Committee of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, with the aim of organising local joint events.

'It will take us a little time to chart our course. However, in general terms, we will continue to promote the benefits of ICE membership and to highlight the work of the profession.
