Highways Agency begins drive for annual network-wide structural condition surveys

Survey specialist Fugro Aperio has begun an innovative high-speed road condition survey as part of the Highways Agency’s drive to introduce annual network level structural testing on the full trunk road network

Fugro Aperio is collecting and processing data from up to 7,000 lane kilometres of the English trunk road network using the Highways Agency’s Traffic Speed Deflectometer (TSD).

The innovative TSD technology uses Doppler lasers to measure the speed at which the pavement deflects in response to load. The non-contact technology allows surveys to be conducted at up to 80km/h, vastly reducing the risk to motorists caused by slower moving deflection techniques such as deflectograph and falling weight deflectometer (FWD).

The company is carrying out the surveys in a two-month programme which started February 2012.
