High salaries lure graduates away from profession

CIVIL ENGINEERING graduates are being lured away from the profession by high paying management consultancy firms, according to a report published this week.

The Graduate careers survey reveals that this year up to one in eight recruits to management consultants and one in ten recruits to merchant banks will be engineering graduates.

Martin Birchall of High Fliers Research, who compiled the report, said: 'The thing that makes engineers particularly attractive is their problem solving techniques and their numeracy, which are among the core skills that consultancies and merchant banks look for.'

The report claims more than half of engineering graduates expect to find a job immediately. Some 17% expect to be looking for a graduate engineering job, 9% expect to start a postgraduate course and 21% are undecided - a much higher percentage than graduates from languages, sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities.

The preferred employers for civil engineering students this year are Ove Arup, BP and Shell.

'The survey shows that students leaving university this year are much more confident about their job prospects and are aware that there are more vacancies available for today's graduates than at any time since the late 1980s,' said Birchall.

The annual study of final year students at 22 top universities was based on 10,000 interviews carried out by the specialist student and graduate market research company.
