Herts of the matter

Professor Bonner's comments regarding the closure of the University of Hertfordshire's civils course are a bit strange (NCE 19 October).

The most significant factor for the closure is the difficulty in recruiting well qualified UK students. I was taken on to the HND course at Herts in 1991 with one A-level and then passed the degree.

There was also a significant contingent of overseas students who paid fees in one way or another. Sorry, I believe that it is a financial issue and the closure of civils courses is very sad indeed.
