Helping hand

In relation to the issue of Network Rail staff (Letters last week), the ICE has sympathy for any members undergoing a period of personal difficulty.

Any member experiencing such a situation should contact ICE's Benevolent Fund Helpline on free phone (0800 5873428), or on (01444 417979) for appropriate support.

The ICE is prevented by its Royal Charter in taking up the cudgel on behalf of any individual members as it is not a trade union. The role of ICE is to promote the art and science of civil engineering.

In its role as a qualifying body, the Institution has a duty to ensure its members maintain a professional standard. If any person feels that an ICE member has breached professional conduct rules, individuals should make a complaint, which will be fully investigated.

Jon Prichard, director of membership, ICE, One Great George Street, SW1P 3AA
