Help test-drive the new Eurocode

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS are being offered a chance to try their hand at designing under the new geotechnical Eurocode 7 (EC7) and help finalise the UK's National Annex.

The British Standards Institution published BS EN 1997-1, the geotechnical design Euro e, in December 2004. The National Annex to the code will follow during 2005/6 in preparation for the switch to design using the Structural Eurocodes.

To help complete the National Annex, BGA is collaborating with the GeoTechNet project to encourage UK geotechnical engineers to try their understanding of the Eurocode on some design examples.

Those interested in taking part should visit the BGA website where they will find the 10 design examples, plus guidance on how to apply the BS EN and how to present results.

If response is sufficiently high, a workshop will be held at BRE in Watford later this year, where leading EC7 experts will assess and compare results. Only those submitting designs for at least three of the problems will be invited to attend.

Information on how to take part can be found on the BGA website, www. britishgeotech. org. uk
