Health & safety alive and well

Aurang Zeb calls for a charter mark for safety to promote and reward safety in the construction industry (Letters 8 June). This area is already well catered for. The British Safety Council has an International Safety Awards scheme. Each year, large numbers of construction companies enter, and many of them win awards.

Further up the scale, our Five Star Health and Safety Audit scheme is an excellent indicator of the level of a company's methods and attitudes.

David Ballard (F), chief executive, British Safety Council, 70 Chancellors Road, London W6 9RS
