The core of what will be the world's tallest building is rising above the sands of Dubai.

Contracting joint venture Samsung-Besix-Arabtec started on the 575m tall reinforced concrete spine of the Burj Dubai tower in March and is now advancing skyward in 3m lifts. Casting has been broken down into six operations to enable a three day cycle, with floors and wing walls following on once concrete strength has developed.

Geometry of the core and floor plates changes from one lift to the next, and the formwork system will have to withstand winds of up to 200km/h. German formwork supplier Doka has adapted its self climbing shuttering system for the project. Casting all of the 154 storeys is to be complete by the end of 2007. A steel superstructure tied down to the core will take the Burj to whatever height is ultimately needed to take the world's tallest building crown - as yet undecided.
