The Hatfield crash has so far cost Railtrack at least £250M, the company revealed this week as it published interim results to the end of September.

The figure allows for £100M for track inspection and repair, and £150M for compensation to train operators. However, with operators claiming a reported £330M , the final cost to Railtrack could reach £430M.

Interim results reported pretax profits of £175M for the six months to September, down 31% on the same period last year.
