Hamza released on bail

ALEXANDRIA LIBRARY designer Dr Mamdouh Hamza was released from custody last week after family friends put up bail.

Hamza, a world famous geotechnical engineer and ICE Fellow, is awaiting trial at the Old Bailey charged with soliciting the murder of four people (NCE 29 July).

The Egyptian engineer must stay in the UK as a condition of the bail, which secured his release from London's Belmarsh Prison last Friday.

He is due to appear in court on 1 September when a preliminary pleas and direction hearing is scheduled.

A determined effort by his legal team drew together family and friends to stand surety for him.

In a statement through his solicitor on Monday Hamza expressed his gratitude for the messages of support he had received from fellow professionals worldwide.

Under the bail conditions the police will retain Hamza's passport but there is no restriction on him continuing to manage his Cairo based practice, Hamza Associates.
