Hallowed Hallam

Letters

What sad news, that Sheffield Hallam is to close its civil engineering courses (NCE 4 July). The article describes a department that I do not recognise from my own experience over many years.

British Waterways Technical Services has been the lucky beneficiary of many sandwich students and graduates from Hallam. Currently, three of the seven excellent graduates working in the civils group are from Hallam, one of whom made it to the final of the NCE Graduate of the Year Award last month - hardly the sign of failing course.

Chris Rainger, principal construction engineer, British Waterways Technical Services
