Steve Richings

Steve Richings left Cardiff University in July 2006 with a MEng in civil engineering and joined Halcrow the following September. "I had been working with Halcrow for various work placements, and they had even sponsored me through university," explains Steve. "By the time my finals came around I was secure in the knowledge that they had offered me a job with the bridge design team, which was brilliant."

His first job as a graduate engineer took Steve into a placement with Transport for London, where he focused on contract documents and technical work. "At the moment, I am working on the spans for coal conveyors for a power station," he says. "However, in a few weeks I'm off to our Dubai office for a four-month placement, working on ramps and slip roads for a major highways scheme."

Steve is an enthusiastic ambassador for the firm. "I'm enjoying everything about the job," he says. "Every day is different; the team I am in is working on some major bridge contracts. I am forever asking questions, and I'm learning a lot. This is a very personable and approachable firm. I have a designated engineer who is really keeping me motivated for my ICE professional training, and I've been sent on lots of courses. They give a lot of priority to graduate training here." Halcrow's sports and social club puts on lots of events every year, and Steve has even proved a classic old adage wrong by successfully organising a department trip. "It was a brewery tour," he says. Well, that's one way of describing it...
