Graduate profile: Elzbieta Solowczuk
Ella studied for her MEng in civil engineering at the Technical University of Szczecin, in her home country of Poland. She knew by the time that she graduated in March 2006 that she wanted to continue to follow her specialisation in roads and highways, and she also knew that she wanted to get a taste of working in another country to broaden her field of experience.

Coming over to the UK to start her career, Ella applied to Halcrow and was immediately interviewed and offered a place in the Swindon highways team. Since then, she has not looked back. "I have been working on some incredibly exciting projects, despite being still relatively new to the firm," she said. "I am currently involved in schemes for some local authorities – but other projects have included working on the detail design for Edinburgh Tram and the tender for Junction 11 of the M4."

"I am working really hard but it is all so interesting and enjoyable. I learn something new every day and I am being given levels of responsibility that I did not expect, which makes things really exciting. The challenges are there – but everyone here is so friendly and helpful that I can always ask for advice and support if I need it. I enjoy being part of the team here and have a good social network with other graduates, so there is always a lot going on. I have signed up to the ICE training agreement. My supervising engineer is making sure that I get my reports written up, she is pushing me to do things, to stretch myself further. She’s great, always giving me things to read and keeping me motivated. I love working on highways – I find it very rewarding work. It is what I always wanted to do, and Halcrow is enabling me to give my career a clear focus."
